There has been a lot of talk about vision, planning the next year, goal setting, prophecy for 2021... etc – even as we prepare to celebrate Christmas. Vision, planning and other such topics are one of my favourite. It's not a surprise, because we architects are referred to as 'the thinking eye bearers.' (Sorry I just had to blow that trumpet😌😂).
When I began to develop a desire for content creation, I thought I would start off with a YouTube channel😅, for obvious reasons 😂... When I finally felt that it was time, I kept giving excuses until one day it hit me, Wait a minute, videos are not the only way to share content...?
So this blog was formed😀... And just when I was excited to start sharing art and architecture, God says, "Help people understand they are God's Artwork first, before discussing my other artwork... By starting with the most basic form of artwork: writing..." And what a better time to discuss this than now: as we end one year and start another... Weeell we should have started in November... But oh well...
Obviously I don't intend to start from the alphabet: your nursery school teacher did that well... Or poetry: your highschool English teacher, weeell... But I will share with you about the forms of writing that have changed my life the most:
- 📝 Journaling/diary keeping... And later...
- 💹Vision boards 🎊🎊
These two forms are so personal to each of us that there is no right or wrong way to do it... In fact all I'll be doing here is to give you suggestions on how to make it more fun and more effective... It is the one space of your life that you get to do something/create and no one judges you for it...
We'll start with journaling.
What Is Journaling?
Merriam Webster defines journaling as: the act of recording your experiences, ideas or reflections.
So simple, right?
Before we look at the
whys, benefits, styles and tips of journaling let us first dismiss the following misconceptions:
❎ Journaling is Boujee😅:
I've been told this soo many times. Especially when I add the fact that I was in The Kenya High School😂... Journaling is for everyone: small, great, rich kid, ghetto, classy etc... When we look at the reasons why we write you'll understand more. I even think, if just half of Kenyans kept a journal (of whichever type), 'they' would be measuring the economies against the Kenyan Shilling😁... That's how powerful journaling is.
❎ It is for sad, stressed, or depressed people😅
Show me a happy person and I will show you someone who undertakes one form of writing or another... Journaling is a thoughtful and purposeful experience that involves processing what’s happening around you by looking internally. That means such a person is so in touch with their emotions and most times a good manager of them.
❎ You should only journal when you feel sad, stressed, or depressed.
Almost similar to no. 2 but this one refers to people who journal but only do it when experiencing negative emotions. I used to do that at some point in campus. But I ended up converting such a beautiful experience into a pit of despair so I rarely revisited it. I believe we should record some if not all the good emotions too. My gratitude journal is currently my favourite. I've reread it so many times and always look forward to filling it.
❎ You gatta be the next Sydney Sheldon or C.S Lewis or Yve Azar😉...
Don’t be intimidated by these great novelists, poets, philosophical writers and bloggers. You’re not trying to be them and even if you are, your journal doesn’t know it. Being true to your thoughts, collecting them gently, and expressing them on paper is the sole goal in journaling.
❎ Nothing really happens in my day that is journal-worthy...
This one is the most common. Journaling is not only about the major world-shattering events that go down. It's also about the smaller details of life. What you are feeling... That random thought that just crossed your mind... Why is it there?
There are so many myths and misconceptions out there about journaling but these are the major ones I found. Stay tuned to this series and any myths you may still have will melt away😂😂.
If this post blessed you please share with your loved ones and invite them to this platform so that we may grow together.
In the meantime, do you keep a journal? Which myth have you encountered the most? Feel free to share in the comments.
💕
Hihihi I enjoyed this. My greatest struggle with journaling has been trying to be the next John Grisham😂😂... Looking forward to the whole series...
ReplyDeleteHaha... I get you.
DeletePart 2 will be out in an hour
